Foundations

Sound foundations are the key to any building project, and we use traditional laid concrete to support the base and floor throughout. These are levelled and an air gap left underneath the summerhouse to allow airflow which prevents any damp reaching the supports and frame, and prevents condensation and rot. The benefits of this system are that existing concrete foundations from previous structures such as sheds do not need to be removed as we can bridge between the two. Ideally the site needs to be level and free of obstruction, which will be checked at the survey stage, but groundworks can be undertaken prior to the build to prepare the area if necessary.

Structure, Insulation and Internal Finishing

All our garden buildings are constructed with traditional timber walls and floor, using heavy duty solid structural graded timber frames that carry the load of the building. The walls and floor are manufactured using C16 (British Standard) graded structural supports.

Our summerhouses aren’t just for warm weather use. Featuring 50mm rigid insulation panels sandwiched between the wall cavities on the walls, floor and roof, the heat and sound retention properties of our summerhouses are excellent. Each structure is then wrapped in a breathable waterproof membrane which in turn is encased in commercial specification felt, which allows air and moisture out and waterproofs the interior, so preventing condensation forming. Each build incorporates an overhang above the bifold doors, providing a contemporary appearance and also some weather protection.
Internally our walls are finished with plasterboard which is professionally skimmed then painted to give a beautiful finish, and we provide and fit a professional quality laminate flooring which is available in a variety of colourways, and is finished with wooden skirting which can be stained or painted as requested.

Cedar – the perfect finish

Cedar is the premium choice in cladding for any exterior building, summerhouse or garden office. Highly durable, with a low shrinkage factor, naturally resistant to decay, dimensionally stable and light and easy to work with, Western Red Cedar is a truly wonderful material, and it’s beautiful colour and texture is instantly recognisable. We use superior grade Canadian Western Cedar Tongue and Groove planks in 14 cm widths with a thickness of 18mm, the heaviest available. The has a clear grain in the with the minimum of blemishes and no knots, and is sustainably sourced, the supply being monitored by the PEFC Council, an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification.

Our Cedar is also treated with the market leading preservative and stain which will enhance the hue of the timber and penetrates deep into the wood, providing outstanding weather and UV protection that prevents cracking, peeling or blistering, and helps the timber retain it’s hue and colour.

Doors and Windows

We fit premium powder coated slim profile metal framed bi-fold doors as standard, which comply with BS6375 Severe weather rating standard for both open in and open out configurations, and have anti-jemmy pins included so that your door cannot be removed from the outside by intruders trying to gain access. The benefit of a metal doors and windows beyond just appearance, is the reduction of expansion and contraction that can affect the operation and fit of PVC doors over time. A West London Summerhouse is designed to last, and our choice of materials mean you should enjoy trouble free use for decades to come. Finishing is in a choice of Matt Black, Matt Grey, or White, and windows are also available in a variety of sizes and matching finishes.

Drainage

Drainage can be critical to a summerhouse, since downpours may lead to an excessive amount of run off water which needs to be contained. On all builds we fit guttering to the rear of the summerhouse, which is collected in a water tub with an overflow drain away. On larger buildings in excess of 15m2, we can also look at installing a soak away drainage solutions if the situation of the plot requires it.

Decking

We’re particularly proud of our deck, which is made from 4 cm thick cedar planking giving a stylish contemporary appearance to your summerhouse, and which complements the cladding beautifully. Each garden building or office comes with a 1m wide deck across the front of the structure as standard, with a choice of recessed ultra violet or white deck lights, redefining your garden’s appearance the evenings. We can also quote on extended decking areas as required.

Electrical Package

Our standard summerhouse electrical fittings package includes four metal double socket power points (one with 2 USB charging ports) and matching metal light switches, internal recessed spotlights, 2 stylish exterior sidelights, and either inset LED deck lights or downlights fitted into the overhang, all fitted by a qualified electrician.
These are connected via a consumer control unit (modern fuse box), which in turn will be connected via an armoured cable to your electricity supply, and a PAT Certificate will be issued before sign off. Other electrical sockets can be specified as extras, and we can also fit aerial sockets where required.
